Western Leyte College Joins Summit in Tacloban City

One hundred seventy-three WLC students joined the first ever Leyte Samar IT Summit at the Library Hall of UP, Tacloban City last September 7, 2012 on the theme “Region 8 Aiming High for Success in IT.”


The delegation was composed of students major in Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Associate in Computer Technology and Computer Science. Faculty members, seven of them, were with the group. It was headed by the Dean of the College of Information and Communications Technology Cheryl Q. Montederamos.

Other schools represented were Samar State University, ACLC of Tacloban City, EVSU Burauen, EVSU Tanauan, St. Mary’s College of Catbalogan, St. Paul School of Business and Law and the Visayas Christian Institute of Technology of Abuyog, Leyte.

Dr. Warren D. Cordeta, Education Supervisor II of the CHED Regional Office 8 welcomed the participants. The speakers with their respective topics were as follows: CS Program Head Hilario F. Narida, Internet Crime Awareness, Think before You Click; Founder and President of PhilNITS Ma. Corazon M. Akol, PhilNITS Standard and Certification Program; Chief Systems Application Developer of G Travel Hancy F. Narida, Web Application Threat and Vulnerabilities; and Founder of Pinoy Robot Games Melvin R. Matulac on Pinoy Robotics.

The launching of Samar IT Society was done by Dr. Irene C. Taguinod, Chairman of LESITS 2012. She announced the next summit might be held in Ormoc City. Dean Arlene D Cebu of AMA Tacloban delivered the closing remarks.

The highlight of the summit was the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement on membership between WLC and the PhilNITS, represented by its president, Ma. Corazon M. Akol. WLC was represented by Executive Vice President Emmanuel A. Fiel. Present in the signing of the MOA was Dean Cheryl Q. Montederamos and Mr. Peter Que, Vice President of PhilNITS.

The summit was hosted by Mr. Joergen T. Arradaza, Jr., instructor of WLC.


Western Leyte College Holds Faculty Development Program Seminar

The College of Information and Communications Technology of Western Leyte College conducted a Development Program Seminar on August 3-5, 2012 at the fourth floor of the WLC High School Building.

In an interview, Dean Cheryl Q. Montederamos of the College of Information and Communications Technology said that the seminar was attended by members of the faculty and Information Technology and Computer Science students.

Montederamos further disclosed that 10 members of the CICT faculty attended the Android Development Application Seminar: Joergen T. Arradaza Jr., Joscoro E. Cantero, Ryan T. Bughao, Francis Rodolfo R. Quirino Jr., Edward B. Bertulfo, Pol A. Miro, Julito L. Ortiz, Benedick A. Ganzo, Wowie P. Phua, and Archiebald R. Gablino. The speaker was Mr. Irysh Paulo R. Tipay from Hyperworx Industry.

Another student development training, Basic CISCO Seminar was attended by 22 Third Year BSIT Students. The speakers were Mr. Raphael Del Rosario and Mr. Rexter John Royo of Hyperworx Industry. A Seminar on Research (Thesis and Capstone Project Seminar) was attended by 31 Third Year and Fourth Year BSCS and BSIT Students. The speakers were Mr. Albert A. Vinluan and Mr. Romuald John De Guzman. Both are also from Hyperworx Industry.

The delighted dean said that the development seminar was conducted to keep informed the CICT teachers and students of the Information Era. She was grateful to the administration of WLC for its support in the activity.


Forty-two and 86/100 (42.86) percent or 9 out of 21 of Western Leyte College members of the Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants passed the Certified Public Accountant Board Examination held in Manila, Cebu and Iloilo last October 6, 7, 13 and 14.

In that examination, the National Passing Rate was 44.78%, spelling out a difference of 1.92% vis-à-vis the WLC’s Passing Rate. Baguio and Davao were also testing venues.

The following were the Certified Public Accountants, fresh from the oven: Juliet S. Rebuyas, Niña Grace Rita Mangle, Maria Sheena L. Quiandao, May Ann T. Uy, Neptali G. Maroto, Jelyn B. Bitoon, Maria Irene R. Batican, Raelane D. Chua, and Yolando T. Flores.

Meanwhile, Dean Manolito A. Edaño of the College of Accountancy revealed that in the CPA Board Examination held in Manila and Cebu last May 2012, 4 or 33.33% of the 12 WLC takers made it. Two were conditional.

The passers were: Carla Fe C. Noya, Irish Glenn D. Manalo, Paul Julius S. De Pio and Rosemary Iburda.

Only 1, 995 or 37.54% of 5,315 takers throughout the country passed the aforecited examination.




Western Leyte College is currently constructing a P17-M five-storey building to be completed in a year’s time.

Vice president Emmanuel A. Fiel, told the College Torch this has been constructed to house the Administration Office, Information and Communications Technology Department, the Computer Engineering Department, and the envisioned Speech Laboratory. He said the vacated ICT space will be occupied by the College of Law.

Asked as to the source of funding for the constructed building, the vice president aptly said it’s been shelled out from the school’s general fund.

To beef up funds for WLC, the vice president hinted having the ground floor of the building rented to businessmen.

Engr. Manny Fragata of the Gian Carlo Construction Company is presently supervising the construction.
